The sub. ject for debate was: "That having regard to the report of the commission upon the financial relations between Great Britain and Ireland, the rectification of the inequality in the contribution of Ireland to the Imperial Exchequer should be undertaken forthwith." Mr. J. L. M. Hamilton opened in the affirmative. and Mr. Archibald Hair in the negative. The following members also spoke :-Dr. Herbert-Smith. Mr. Arthur E. Clarke, A. H. Richardson, Hamilton Fox, Neville Tebbutt, Haseldine Jones, J. B. Eastley. The motion was lost by five votes.-The subject for debate at the next meeting of the society on Tuesday, the 9th Feb. is, "That the case of Pitt Pitts v. George and Co. (75 L. T. Rep. 320; (1896) 2 Ch. 866) was wrongly decided."

DEWSBURY, WAKEFIELD, AND DISTRICT.-A joint debate was held in the Royal Hotel, Dewsbury, on Wednesday afternoon, the 27th Jan., with the Leeds Law Students' Society; Mr. H. A. Hughes in the chair. There were also present: Messrs, F. G. Jackson, A. E. Masser, W. Bowling, H. E. Clegg, N. Stephenson, E. H. Whitley (Leeds) and J. Marshall, C. E. Peace, H. Hodgson, T. Catterall, S. A. R. Preston, H. J. B. Wadsworth, W. Ibberson, W. Gledhill, W. H. Kingswell, N. N. Shaw, T. H. Asquith, H. Pickles (Dewsbury and Wakefield). The subject for the afternoon was a debate on the following: "Jones writes a libellous letter about Smith and locks it up in his desk. Shortly afterwards Jones moves to another house, one of the furniture remover's men breaks open the desk and steals the contents, including the libellous letter, the purport of which he makes known. Can Smith recover damages from Jones?" Mr. F. G. Jackson (Leeds) opened the discussion in the affirmative, and Mr. J. Marshall (D. and W.) followed on behalf of the negative. Mr. A. E. Masser (Leeds) continued in support of the affirmative, and Mr. C. E. Peace (D. and W). On the debate being thrown followed in support of the negative. open almost every gentleman joined in the discussion. After the first two leaders had replied, the Chairman summed up and decided in favour of the negative. Afterwards the Leeds students were entertained to dinner by the Dewsbury and Wakefield students, and the remainder of the evening was enjoyably spent in a social manner, the following gentlemen contributing to the musical portion: Messrs A. E. Masser, F. G. Jackson, H. E. Clegg, N. Stephenson, H. J. B. Wadsworth, W. H. Kingswell, and H. Pickles.

MANCHESTER.-At the seventh meeting of the session, held in the Law Library last week, Mr. Leonard Tatham, solicitor (one of the vicepresidents of the society), presided. The January Law Notes moot was the subject for debate: "A., owner and in possession of Whiteacre, verbally lets to B. all shooting rights' over Whiteacre at £50 a year.

B., under the contract, enters upon the property, and exercises his right of shooting. Shortly afterwards A. lets Whiteacre to C., a farmer, without consulting B. C. proceeds to shoot the ground game under the Act of 1880. B. complains to A. that, after letting all the shooting rights to him, he had no business to let the farm to C., and, as B. took the shooting more particularly for the ground game, he brings an action against A. for breach of contract. A. pleads (1) that a right to shoot cannot arise without a deed; (2) that even assuming that a deed is not necessary, at any rate, by virtue of sect. 4 of the Statute of Frauds, the verbal contract did not bind him; (3) that even assuming the verbal contract, followed by entry, to have been binding, he (A.) had a perfect right to let the farm to C., as the contract with B. was made on the implied understanding that A. was to have the right to let the lands for agricultural purposes, which letting would, under the Ground Game Act 1880, carry with it the right, concurrently with B.'s rights, to shoot the ground game. B. joins issue in these defences. What will be the result of the action? -Mr. J. Hurst opened the case on behalf of the plaintiff, and Mr. E. C. Pearson for the defendant. The whole question of the Ground Game Act and the cases arising on it were discussed; speeches being contributed by Messrs. F. Preston, G. Buckley, Z. M. Lord, F. Hindle, W. Booth, F. W. Watson, C. R. Allen, and F. S. Oppenheim. The Chairman, in summing up, touched briefly on the various points raised, and gave an epitome of the law relating to the holding of shooting rights. The meeting, thereupon, came to a decision in the defendant's favour by a majority of fourteen.

NEWCASTLE-UPON-TYNE.-The tenth general meeting of the society was held in the Law Library on the 27th Jan.; Mr. W. G. Robson, M.A. in the chair. The first business was the election of four speakers to represent the society in an ensuing joint debate with Sunderland, when, on a ballot being taken, the following were elected: Messrs. E. C. Sanders, A. D. Minton-Senhouse, L. H. Booth, and G. W. Chapman. The subject of debate was as follows: "The Local Authority of Exborough, acting as surveyors of highways, duly contract with Stone to repair a highway within their district. Stone commenced the work by picking up the surface of the road for about fifty yards in order to give holding for fresh metal. He did not light this portion of the road. Jehu drove along in the dark, and his horse getting on to the roughened road took fright and ran away and injured Jehu. Can Jehu recover damages from Stone ?" Messrs. J. F. Stewart and E. H. Motum opened in the affirmative, and Messrs. A. M. Oliver and E. F. Hart opposed. On the debate being thrown open, the following also spoke: Messrs. A. D. M. Senhouse, W. J. Brandbrig, R. E. B. Lisle, J. Winn, A. B. Lemon, and S. D. Cole; and Mr. E. H. Motum replied on behalf of the opener. The Chairman summed up the arguments, and on putting the question to the meeting, it was decided by a majority of four in the negative. There were sixteen members present.

LEGAL OBITUARY.

Dr. CHARLES J. FOSTER has just died at Christchurch, New Zealand, in the seventy-eighth year of his age. He was a distinguished member of the London University, from which he received the degree of LL.D. in 1849, and of which he was a fellow from 1858 to 1863. He was formerly a member of the Liberation Society, and for some years was its parliamentary secretary. He was called to the Bar at Lincoln's-inn in 1841. His wellknown work on jurisprudence, published in England before he went to New Zealand, added much to his reputation, and a second work on the same subject, but dealing with the practice of the colonial courts, is of considerable importance. During his residence in Christchurch he continued almost to the last the pursuit of his profession. He married, in 1859, the only daughter of the late Mr. James Ogston, who, with a son and a daughter, survives him.

The Law and the Lawyers.

A PROJECT for a central club for the Bar near the Law Courts has been reported upon favourably by a committee of the Bar Council, and is now under discussion.

OTHER matters are engaging the attention of this body which are of great public importance-ex. gr., the Evidence in Criminal Cases Bill, the establishment of central criminal courts in the counties, the continuous sittings of an adequate fixed number of courts of Nisi Prius in London, and the question of doing away with the special fee now payable when a barrister goes off his own circuit.

OWING to the beneficence of the members of the Bar who control the purse-strings of the Inns of Court--the Benchers -which made their annual grant of £600 retrospective, the council is in funds, and has authorised the executive committee to increase the salaries of a somewhat hard-worked staff.

As was to be expected, the transfer of the patent actions from the Chancery to the Queen's Bench Division has already resulted in the blocking of one court, sitting to take non-juries. There is ample work for a Patent Court, and if an additional judge is to be had, he might well be selected from the scientific lawyers, and given a special court.

COUNTY COURT judges do not all agree in their habits. The practitioners in the Birmingham County Court complain that, whilst Judge WHITEHORNE adjourns for half an hour for lunch, Judge HARINGTON eats a sandwich in a momentary interval. Judge HARINGTON ought to reflect that sandwiches do not agree with all legal digestions, and a reasonable pause midway, even in the heated career of County Court business, might be a good sanitary provision.

THE Elizabethan Stage Society sacrificed everything to tradition in their reproduction of "Twelfth Night" in the The Inn has a fine hall, Middle Temple Hall this week. whose acoustic properties are tested only when the TREASURER gives the toast of "The Queen." Had elocution been taught in it, the glaring and hopeless defect would have been discovered and perhaps remedied. On Wednesday Equity took up a position on raised seats at the remote end of the hall. The actors were not distinctly audible half-way down. Some guests read the play while the acting was going on-a proceeding destructive of all real enjoyment. The representation was very good-as an historic picture quite unique.
