ALMIGHTY and everlasting God. . . grant that neither through arrogance begotten of prosperity, nor conceit bred of successful achievement, may we forget our dependence upon Thee for daily sustenance. . . . OUR

UR Loving Father, we have come into this house this morning from our work: work which is varied. We come, each from her own past-the home, the training, the traditions which have been hers. We bring with us, each our own present-its personal care, its failure, its easy success or the plain and commonplace routine; its grief or its imagined troubles, the happiness or its substitute for happiness. May we be of one mind in one place this hour. We enter into Thy Presence. May we have ears to hear, eyes to discern Thee, understanding hearts. Help us to realize Thy nearness. We know that in measure as Thou dost dwell in us we make wherever we are, a part of Thy Kingdom. Once again to-day we listen to the story of the planting of the seed, of the burying of the leaven, of the net which was thrown into the sea. As

Thy disciples of old received new faith and courage to carry on, so may we this day. Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done in this place and in our hearts as it is in heaven and this we ask in the hope of the coming of Thy Kingdom everywhere. Amen.

GOD, the Creator and Preserver of all manand of man

kind, we humbly beseech Thee for all sorts and conditions of men: that Thou wouldst be pleased to make thy ways known unto them, thy saving health unto all nations. More especially we pray for thy holy Church universal; that it may be so guided and governed by thy good Spirit, that all who profess and call themselves Christians may be led into the way of truth, and hold the faith in unity of spirit in the bond. of peace, and in righteousness of life. . . . OR sheer delight in living we praise thee, dear God,

for vigor in youth and well-being in age. You give us mountains to climb and surf to ride and zest in sport and the sporting spirit in work. We want to play the game, Great Captain. We aim to keep in training our whole life long-live clean, drive hard, win out. We mean to stay fit to welcome happy hardships that harden us. Exult with us in our success. Stiffen our pluck in defeat. Keep us watching the signals. And hearken, O Lord, to this our chant for our chance in this good, glad world.

WHEN We singers, the sun and moon and

stars which Thou hast made, what is man that Thou art mindful of him, and the son of man that Thou visitest him? Thou coverest thyself with light as with a garment. Thou spreadest out the heavens as a curtain. Thou makest the clouds thy chariot, and ridest upon the wings of the wind. The heavens declare thy glory and the firmament showeth the work of thy hands. Day uttereth instruction unto day, and night showeth knowledge unto night. The voice of thy works goeth forth to the ends of the world.

O that men would praise the Lord for His goodness and for the wonder of His works. Give us, O Lord, souls that see. Amen.

FATHER of light, by whose hands the fires of the

sun are fed; who hast kindled in our hearts the desire to know; we bless Thee for leading us into a life wherein light and darkness are wonderfully mingled. On our knees we would learn to think. Standing on our feet we would learn to pray. O Thou in whose being the simplicity and mystery of life do meet together, cleanse our prayers with the sanctity of reason, ennoble our reasonings with the majesty of prayer, and bring us onward through darkness and through light, till, in thy presence, and before our eyes, the power that made the stars and the love that exalts our hearts shall kiss each other, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Thou sendest forth

LL creatures, O Lord, wait Thou givest they gather. hand, they are filled with good. thy Spirit, they are created. Thou renewest the face of the earth. Thou sendest the springs into the valleys which run among the hills; they give drink to every beast of the field: and by them the birds of the heavens have their habitations, singing among the branches. All thy works praise Thee and the earth is full of thy goodness. What shall we render unto the Lord for all his benefits? We will take the cup of salvation and call on the name of the Lord.

We bless Thee for all Thou hast done for us, for all Thou art doing especially for our higher nature, for our inheritance uncorruptible, and for that the Son of Man came to seek and to save, that we might have life, and have it more abundantly. Give us grace to live as we ought to live in view of these great things. Convince us of the value of our souls, made for immortality, made to outlive the earth and outshine the stars. Amen.

GOD, we thank Thee for this universe, our great home; for its vastness and its riches, and for the manifoldness of the life which teems upon it and of which we are part. We praise Thee for the arching sky and the blessed winds, for the driving clouds and the constellations on high. We praise Thee for the salt sea and the running water, for the everlasting hills, for the trees, and for the grass under

our feet. We thank Thee for our senses by which we can see the splendor of the morning, and hear the jubilant songs of love, and smell the breath of the springtime. Grant us, we pray Thee, a heart wide open to all this joy and beauty, and save our souls from being so steeped in care or so darkened by passion that we pass heedless and unseeing when even the thornbush by the wayside is aflame with the glory of God. THOU who flingest cloud shadows over lonely blue summits and fertile green valleys, thy prodigality amazes us. The vast wild uplands that are parks of thy planting; the steeps patterned in loveliness and sky glory over all. Ever Thou lurest us aloft. "Keep us on the higher levels of desire." Give us to "live as on a mountain:" with wide outlook: with past and future spread out before us in perspective and proportion. May we go forward and upward, on difficult or dizzy ways, with eye fixed on the path, step by quiet step, until, in time, we gain that sinew and endurance that delight in toil and hardship.

For on thy mountains, Lord, we find, at first, weariness and panting discouragement. Then, as we set ourselves, on a day, or day by day, at slopes that seem impossible, there cometh to us, by degrees, a sweet readiness of all our frame, balanced, obedient, unconscious. So do we crave a training for our other selves, that, though daunted, we gain, by plodding on, that
