TO ENGINEERS.-Subsoil Pulverizer.-A

the undersigned for an approved draft design (accompanied by a written explanation) of a MACHINE, to consist of a series of augers, for the general pulverization, to a depth of 3 or 4 feet, of a marly soil, free from all obstructions but occasional small pieces of limestone; to be worked by a portable steam engine of 6 horse power, the augers to admit of expeditious liberation from the soil; but their number, shape, position (whether in one or two rows), and distance from each other, are matters left to the judgment of competitors. It is almost needless to add that no existing invention (Fowler's or any other) could effect so deep a pulverization as that considered essential to the efficient cultivation of the Vine in our Australian Colonies. Designs to be sent in on or before the 15th of August.-H. S. WILLS, 10 Queen's-terrace, Queen's-road, Bayswater. (319):

STEAM CULTIVATION.

CHANDLER AND OLIVER

(315)

AVE much pleasure in being able to state that they are now prepared to execute orders for their
PATENT STEAM WINDING ENGINES AND PLOUGHS, for Cultivating Land by Steam.

The WINDING TACKLE can be fitted to Engines of any maker, and the Plough can be made to take any kind of
pparatus necessary for Cultivating the Soil, such as Scarrifier Tines or Broad Shares, &c. Any Engine now used by
armers can be fitted with the Tackle. It is light and simple, and an ordinary Farm Labourer can work it.
The Engine can be used for Thrashing without taking the Ploughing Tackle off, not requiring more than three or
four horses to take it from place to place.

These Engines are very useful for Pile Driving or Drawing Ballast up inclined planes; at the same time they can be used for Pumping. Farmers will find them most useful for all purposes.

Messrs. CHANDLER and OLIVER are prepared to receive orders for separate Windlasses, which are light and simple, and generally useful.

WATER POISONED

BY LEADEN PIPES.

"The above engraving represents accurately a section of a leaden pipe, which was employed for a short time in conveying water from a well on the grounds of Mr. Dick, of Bonchurch, Isle of Wight. The water has cut these deep pits almost through the pipe, and not only upon the portion which we have illustrated, but has formed similar chasms throughout the entire length."-Erpositor.

Poisoned Water Preventable.

BY THE USE OF GUTTA PERCHA TUBING.

The Gutta Percha Company have been favoured with the following letter,

From Dr. MURRAY, Hull.

"It is impossible to conceive of anything more injurious or destructive to the health of the community than the use of leaden pipes for the conveyance of water. The poisonous salts of lead thereby communicated are most insidious and subtle. I hail with gratitude the substitution of Gutta Percha Tubing, I have had the leaden pipe of my own house removed, and its place supplied with one of Gutta Percha. Nothing can be better. I have also recommended it to others, who have adopted the expedient.

Resistance of Frost.

The Gutta Percha Company have been favoured with the following Letters in reference to the non-conducting properties of Gutta Percha Tubing, in the resistance of Frost.

From J. ARMSTRONG, Esq., M.D., Gravesend. "My private house, which was supplied with your Gutta Percha Tubing some five or six years ago, has never required the slightest attention; and previously, there was no winter passed that we were not deluged in coasequence of the bursting of the leaden pipes."

From HENRY BROWN and SONS, Western Works, 108 Rockingham-street, Sheffield. "We have now a positive proof of the frost-resisting properties of the Gutta Percha Piping. On our premises we have a leaden Pipe and a Gutta Percha one lying side by side. The leaden one has been completely frozen up at least ten days, and the Gutta Percha one is still unaffected.
