The PREFACE.

vii

My Defign in publishing of this Abridg ment, is not to leffen the Value of the Folio Editions, that being far from my Thoughts; but as the Price of the Folio was too great for many Perfons who are employed in the practical Part of Gardening, I was defired by fome of my Friends to fet about this Work.

To which I was the rather induc'd, as it might prevent an Abridgment from injudicious Hands, by which not only my Interest in the Copy would have fuffer'd; but the Publick would have been impofed on with an inaccurate Performance, publish'd, according to the Practice now fo commonly, tho' bafely, purfu'd, with Intention of sharing the Profits of an Author's Labour, without giving him any Confideration for it.

And, indeed, I foon found that this Apprehenfion was far from being Groundless, and that it was highly proper to haften this Work; for an Advertisement was inferted in the publick Papers, of an Abridgment

being nearly finish'd by other Hands, and would foon be fent to the Prefs.

This determin'd me to press the Work forward as faft as my other Bufinefs would permit; and I humbly hope, my good Friends and kind Favourers, will not be displeafed either with the Attempt or the Performance.
