PREFACE.

THE object of the present Manual is to supply the English Churchman with Scriptural texts suitable for the exercise of his thoughts and meditation daily throughout the year.

With the view of stamping the different holy days and seasons with their proper character, passages most relevant to the subjects commemorated have been selected out of the Psalms, Lessons, Epistle or Gospel appointed for those times respectively.

It is to be hoped that he who will make use of the CYCLE will learn, from the prominence with which the distinctive features of the

calendar are thus invested, to realize more fully the true Spirit of the Church of which he is, through Baptism, a member, and to render a more exact obedience to her guidance in other matters.

The moveability of certain seasons has rendered it imperative that proper and different texts be arranged over the whole of their respective ranges; and as two or more run into each other, the quantity of Scriptures thus added has necessarily rendered the Book larger than the ordinary Diaries.
